About Paul
Wawryko
This annual event is being held in loving memory of Dr. Paul Wawryko, who passed away in December of 2023. Paul was a beloved friend, coworker, and family member to countless people and each year we plan to honour his memory with an annual 5K event.
(And why we're running a 5K in his honour)
WHY WE RUN FOR PAUL
Paul was an avid runner, completing the Chicago Marathon 3 times, the Boston Marathon twice, and a half Ironman in Chattanooga.
Paul was an incredibly talented and hard working runner, accomplishing the incredible feat of a sub-3 hour marathon on his first attempt, and completed all 5 of his marathons with sub-3 hour finish times. He aspired to complete the 6 global major marathons and intended to compete in the Boston Marathon annually.
Seeing his loved ones commemorate him in this way would mean a lot to him.
OUR MISSION
The proceeds from the event will be used to create an endowment fund at the University of Manitoba which will lead to an annual scholarship in his name for the department of Pathology, where Paul worked and won a prestigious teaching award as the educator of the year. The remaining funds will be donated to various causes which were near and dear to Paul’s heart. A post-race event will be held featuring a beer created specifically for this event. We believe that an event combining fitness, camaraderie, and the outdoors is a perfect way to remember Paul.
